Avalara AvaTax is a cloud-based solution that automates transaction tax calculations and your tax filing process. It provides real-time tax calculations using tax content from more than 12,000 US taxing jurisdictions and over 200 countries, ensuring your transaction tax is calculated based on current tax rules.
The first step is to create an account and purchase services through Avalara. Follow the steps below to do so.
Go to Avalara.com and click the Get Started button.
Then, follow their sign-up process.
After working with Avalara to complete your profile set-up, you'll need to link some information in your Avalara account to the preferences section in your Tuplo Dashboard.
Avalara Account Number: Required for authentication when using Avalare services for tax calculations.
Avalara Software License Key: Used for authentication and authorization when accessing Avalara services.
Avalara Service URL: Used for communication with Avalara services.
Avalara Company Code: This helps identify the specific company or organization within your Avalara account.
To connect Avalara to your Tuplo account, you must first enable sales tax and select Avalara as your sales tax type.
To connect your Avalara account:
Log into your Tuplo Account and select preferences.
Select sales tax.
Activate the Sales Tax checkbox.
Select Avalara from the drop-down menu.

Once you've verified that your Avalara account is connected, you can use the Get Avalara Locations button to generate a drop-down menu with any locations specified in your Avalara Account. Then, select the desired location to which you want sales tax transactions to be tied.
Additional settings to configure after connecting your Avalara service include:
Default Freight Code: The default Avalara AvaTax System Tax code for Freight/Shipping.

Enable Address Validation: Directs Tuplo to use Avalara to validate shipping addresses.
Recording Documents: You have two options for recording your sales tax transactions. Discuss which option is best for your team with your Avalara representative.
Online - Refers to all orders placed online.
Studio - Refers to all orders created in Tuplo Studio.
Enable Document Committing/Submission: This setting enables tax document submission to Avalara's AvaTax service for record keeping. Transactions will be posted and committed to the AvaTax Admin Console.
Export Avalara Logs: Clicking this button will download two log files, which you can then send to your Avalara representative for support purposes.
Link to AvaTax Admin Console: Access the Avalara AvaTax Admin Console.
Quick Tips!
Address validation through Avalara is required unless you have another integrated partner service, like Shippo, that provides that option.
If you do not have another integrated partner service that provides address validation, you may incur additional costs when using the Avalara option. Make sure to discuss this with your Avalara representative.
With an Avalara account attached to your Tuplo account, you can expect to see more options available.
Avalara defines calls to their service as one of two options.
Portions - Tuplo performs these portion calls anytime tax is calculated. Avalara defines these with a 1:10 ratio compared to a full call.
Full Call - Once tax is calculated and applied to an order, Tuplo performs a full call when accepting payments and closing the order.
Contact Avalara support for more details and information regarding how Avalara charges for portion and full calls.
You can view more details on tax items in your orders by right-clicking them and choosing the Tax Details option.
Committed: Refers to collected tax items. Modifying the order in any way that would cause tax items to require recalculation will remove this status and replace it with uncommitted.
Uncommitted: Tax items that have yet to be collected or need calculation.
Temporary: Tax items built while Avalara is connected but not enabled are given this status. Third-party tax reporting services like NetSuite can use tax items that use this status.
Tuplo, as a platform, will use Avalara to calculate taxes depending on the settings you define. Your tax data is stored for 30 days before it is archived.
Again, we are not tax experts, but we understand the responsibility of being a business owner and are committed to providing solutions as best we can. We highly recommend integrating Avalara tax solutions with Tuplo to manage the laborious task of tax requirements.
If you have any questions outside the functionality that Tuplo and Avalara provide, we kindly direct you to discuss them with Avalara or any other financial advisors you may have on your team.
