Often, different product groups assigned to the same category have nuanced differences. Attributes help solve this problem by describing these differences once the category defines a product group. For example, a category titled "pants," which involves products of different materials and age ranges, would be assigned the attributes of denim and youth sizes.
Attributes primarily provide filtering options to users on your website when searching for products. When viewing a category page or browsing search results, users will see any attributes showing products grouped by type, allowing them to select these to narrow their results. For example, a site user searching for "casual pants" might see material filters for denim, polyester, and cotton.
Effectively utilizing attributes will enhance your customers' shopping experience, allowing them to find what they are looking for and, as a result, increase sales.
Then, to add attributes:
Select the desired group.
Choose More Options > New Attribute.
Enter a title.
Press Return.
Attributes help focus on differences when comparing product groups, but they should still apply to all products within the assigned product group. For example, a product group for Levi's Jeans would feature the attribute of Material > Demin.
